Petsie
Petsie is the only app that will help users find their perfect four-legged friend thanks to its well-tailored response to the needs of the owner as well as the pet. It simplifies the adoption process with a personalized search, easy access to data and constant contact with shelters in one place.
This conceptual UX project was developed during Dare IT mentoring program.
Background
It all started with a problem: how to help shelter animals and provide them with a home that suits their needs?
Research
Based on SW Research Agency's latest survey which addresses the potential barriers to adopting a dog from a shelter, the key obstacles to adopt a dog are:
Concern about potentially difficult parenting and socializing the dog to new conditions.
The doubt related to the lack of suitable conditions in the house or apartment.
Too complicated adoption procedures.
User insights & interviews
To further understand the obstacles, I interviewed people who had already adopted a dog or cat to get a sense of what challenges they faced during the adoption process and what their needs were.
Main problems they pointed were:
Inconsistent information due to the unavailability of some animals online but also due to the selectivity of published information about animals.
People would like to be able to "compare" traits or information about dogs and cats online to facilitate the decision-making stage.
Poor online experience due to the long research process with a lot of data on many sites. They didn’t know where and how to look and when to decide, which made the whole experience more stressful and doubtful.
Solutions
To make the adoption online process easier and more available I decided to create an app with an intuitive search engine.
Based on a pre-filled new owner preference questionnaire (think: Tinder) and completed information about the dog or cat in question, users could compare favorite pets with the click of a button and contact the chosen shelter or current guardian without leaving the app.
Responding to the problem of overly complicated adoption procedures, Petsie had to rely on full transparency and security for both parties.
After confirming the identity at the profile registration and starting the adoption procedure with the selected pet, the user is able to check the adoption status and see the next steps at any time.
Each pet profile is based on a fixed table of basic information that can be automatically compared with other pets with the push of a button below.
By swiping right (again, think: Tinder), the pet is added to our database of favorite pets and provides the opportunity to contact the shelter via chat to start the adoption procedure.
